Some people - including certain politicians and media commentators - seem to be under the impression that benefit claimants are enjoying a life of unearned luxury, confident in the knowledge that the tab for everything from their rent to their widescreen TVs will be picked up by hard-working taxpayers. But does this image in anyway reflect the reality of life on benefits, especially given the current climate of austerity?
Well, the people who brought you Make Bradford British and Why Don't You Speak English? are on a mission to find out, as they bring us this new documentary series, which follows the residents of one of Britain's most benefit-dependent streets.
While some viewers may be keeping their eyes peeled for high-end gadgets, the programme also looks at some of the problems facing the locals, which range from high levels of illiteracy, crime, and drug and alcohol dependency to the difficulties of raising a child in poverty.
